Biomass burning in Indonesia

Fires in Indonesia are not like most other fires. They are extremely difficult to extinguish. They smolder under the surface for long periods, often for months. Usually, firefighters can only put them out with the help of downpours during the rainy season. And they release far more smoke and air pollution than most other types of fires.

Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption, Iceland

The unpronounceable Icelandic volcano that shut down air traffic across the north Atlantic a few years ago and which many people would remember. The image shows copious aerosols.

There are also many NASA images of this eruption. This one shows the extent from Iceland to northern Scotland which I like for the demonstration of the distance these plumes can travel and their areal extent – it appears to be at least 50Km wide!!
